What a glorious autumn (or summer) excursion and day out in the beginning of the Alpine mountains !
We parked our car at the car park at the bottom of the mountain and then walked for about 1.5 hours up through the woods on a hiking track passing
rivers and falls and a few stunning views of the valley and the
alms. Once you reach the Alm, you can treat yourself to a local food speciality while your children enjoy petting the rabbits and goats or have fun on the play equipment (trampolin, swings, tobogans).
How to get there from Schwangau / Neuschwanstein ?
Taking the B17 towards Fuessen, you turn left direction Austria BEFORE crossing the river Lech. Along the Lech and the Lech fall you follow the street into Austria (as you are staying in the EU, there are no border checks) and the village of Vils which is only 5km away. Towards the end of the village you follow signs to “Vilser Alm” and park in a car park at the bottom of the wooded mountain. From here you walk up.
